Markiplier, one of YouTube's top channels known for let's-play videos about scary games and sketch comedy bits had a big announcement today, and it's not what anyone expected. When I say "YouTube Personality" I doubt too many people think "upscale clothing brand" but that's what they've unveiled.

The video clocks in at 4 minutes and 40 seconds, and boils down to three points reiterated many times.

-This is a big project that has taken more than a year, and involved a lot of people (including YouTuber JackSepticEye) to pull off.

-The clothes are NOT "overtly branded" or obnoxious.

-The clothes are designed to be "for everyone" whatever that means.

So, looking at it, Markiplier and Friends have decided to venture into the territory of department store brands like Arizona, Levi, Fila, American Eagle, and more. What a strange move, but okay. What else does their website say about the products.

Well, surprisingly virtually nothing is said about the actual merchandise. It talks about it being "cool" and "comfortable" and to "make sense" but says little more about it in terms of quality, or moreover what separates the new "Cloak" from pretty much any monochrome "name brand" plastered to the wall at JC Penney, Belk, or Macy's.

Well, certainly not the price.

So, a quick recap, 2 very successful YouTubers have launched a line of $85.00 hoodies and $35.00 T-Shirts with little more to back up their new brand than a few buzzwords and their star-power. What could possibly go wrong?

Alright, so if it isn't obvious already, I'm rather unconvinced this was a wise move. While I'm content to simply watch from a distance (here) others have taken offense at Cloak, Markiplier, or some combination of the two. A sampler of the more "recent" additions as of this post...

There are positive responses as well of course, but quite a few of them seem kinda "off"... I dunno, have a look.

But, for the top comment by volume of "likes" received that wasn't pinned up to the top by Markiplier is...

Oof.

But, why are people so mad? Well, I think it stems from two points, and both of them are in the advertising pitch.

1, That the "Brand" is "For Everyone"...

Well, I mean, it's not. I'm not going to argue the brand or it's pricing or any of that, they are welcome to do what they like with it, but to posture yourself as a brand "for everyone" and then presume that most people can/will pay department store prices is asking for trouble, especially in this political/economic climate. There is definitely a market for this new brand, no doubt, but to say it's "for everyone" is ridiculous.

2, That the clothes are not "overtly branded"...

While I know this may seem counter-intuitive, but... when people with money buy a plain white T-Shirt from Supreme for almost $100, they aren't paying for the T-Shirt, they are paying for the "Supreme" logo. Same for virtually every other brand out there, you're not paying for the clothes- they're all slapped together in China, Vietnam, the Philippines, and so on- you are paying for the brand. So, to have the brand not be prominent, then what exactly are people paying for anyway?

So, the only thing left is predictions for the future. That really depends on how much control Mark and Friends have in this affair. Granted it's been in production for a year now, I get the feeling it's more of a company where Mark is a shareholder who gets invited to meetings, and that the actual operation of the company (and it's policies, strategies, etc.) will be handled by an unknown group of people. In the event Mark (and maybe Jack) have some greater voice, the company may yet be able to re-posture itself, or restructure to better suit it's current posturing. If they don't, I'd wager that Cloak will fold before Christmas of next year. If "everyone" was buying designer clothes, then why are all the news stories about the department stores selling these brands still coming out like this...

I'm sorry, the commenters are relentless. Here's some more vitriol for Cloak.

I've got no idea either good sir.

Some bad movies make it past harsh critics better than Cloak has gotten past the Markiplier fan community, wow.

No reason really, here's some more community hate for Cloak.

It does seem a little surreal!

I found JackSepticEye's video of the same nature, for those interested.

Also, according to the diggers on Reddit, the material content is 75% Rayon, which is a polyester knit material found in pretty much all your clothes these days. In short, nothing special about the Cloak brand (versus any other "designer" brand at least) beyond the name.

Here it is, the most striking comment I've read on either page. It's on Mark's video, and... wow, that's pretty sharp.
