Google's immensely popular Gmail system (formerly standing for Garfield Mail, seriously) was stricken with a bug recently that caused it's filtering to go haywire for a period of about 8 hours. Only some users were affected. However, the issue cast a light on the mysterious, purposefully obscured algorithms that run Google and it's properties. It seems we know even less about how Google actually works behind the scenes than we thought we did. The Washington Post has the story HERE.
