The former home of the Detroit Redwings Hockey Team, the Joe Louis Arena, has been abandoned since the start of 2018, and is slated for demolition in the summer of 2019 for redevelopment. The land it's sitting on was originally owned by the city of Detroit, but due to the cities' bankruptcy, the land is being ceded to Detroit's creditors who haven't disclosed any immediate plans. Originally built in 1979, the Joe Louis Arena succeeded the Olympia Arena that had served as the home of the Red Wings since 1924, and was in serious decline. The Joe Louis Arena was noted for it's size, and visibility for fans at the time. Now it's a derelict wreck.
