Plastic bottles leech that plastic chemical taste into whatever you're drinking. That's why coke in glass bottles tastes so much better than it does in plastic. Beer in plastic just sounds gross.
I always figured they didn't want to blur the lines between "soft drink" and alcohol, one which was for kids, and the other which was for adults- but the idea of a plastic taste in it isn't too appealing either, and does make more sense.
