The date is June 9th, 1945, just over a year from the launch of the D-Day operations that ultimately liberated the European continent, and wiped out the Nazi regime. Front and center of it all is General George S. Patton, hero and mastermind who drove American forces to greater victories everywhere that he went.
This photo was beautifully colorized by artist Marina Amaral and what dazzling work it is. Looking at a photo like this, I can only imagine this America- what it would have been like to have lived through this moment. Having suffered through fear and rationing, having witnessed loss and hardship, and then to emerge on the other side victorious. To watch as the men who literally saved the world from an army of darkness march on past- I can only imagine what these people felt. A glimpse of something I doubt we shall ever have ever again anywhere, let alone in this country.
