However, I don't think the movie warranted a sequel. Let alone one that (judging from the trailer at least) is trying to be an Annabelle movie without the branding.

The movie "The Boy" was a really cool movie. Without spoiling the "twist" the film acts as though it is one kind of movie, and then makes a hard turn into another horror subgenre altogether, and I really thought it worked. It wasn't "scary" per se, but it was a really big surprise given how these movies usually go.
