The Saarland is an industrial region on the German/French border, and formerly one of Germany's industrial epicenters. Here, the Völklingen Iron Works still stands, despite being closed in the 1980's due to low demand for iron and steel. Unusually, the immense industrial facility was declared a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO, as one of the last and best remaining examples of the massive factories of the Industrial era... and it's now open for tourists to explore. Tim the Traveller heads inside, check it out!
