So, former Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have a new show coming exclusive to Amazon Video's streaming service, titled "The Grand Tour". It's basically Top Gear, but this time without the BBC's more rigorous oversight (and censorship), as well as the piles of money Amazon has shoveled into the project. Their opening episode is said to have one of the most expensive opening shots in TV history- $3.2 million for some spectacle they've got cooked up (source).
Now, Amazon is no fool- they've been watching Netflix closely, and are well aware that in-house programming is going to make or break these services as they mature, and Prime Video is clearly behind Netflix in terms of content. A show like this promises to correct that rather handily. But, that brings me to my next question- is anyone joining to see the new show?
I for one plan on buying one of those little Fire sticks, they're like $30 or so, and then the video service with Amazon is $7.99 last time I checked, so $40 for what amounts to a Jeremy Clarkson box may seem rather ridiculous for a frugal fellow like me, but I'll be honest, I loved Top Gear to death, and the teasers for the Grand Tour have been amazing- I want to support this show, and hopefully "vote with my wallet" if you will for more content to be moved over to Amazon, thereby justifying my initial purchase.
But, what about you? Let me know what YOU think!
