Say what you will about the Soviet Union and the "copycat" weapons that came about throughout the cold war, when they copied something, they copied it to the letter. One such thing they copied was the American strategy for invading hostile beaches.

The USSR had a number of rather advanced and specialized amphibious attack systems. Pictured is a hovercraft landing ship, and one of it's many PT-76 amphibious tanks. The PT-76 was designed specifically to attack beaches and cross shallow water in conjunction with an invasion force.

So, considering their various weapon systems, would they have ever been a competent threat to a western power in direct combat? I've often wondered how that would turn out.

I tend to think you are right, but it really depends on where it would be. What if they had invaded Mexico, or Alaska (as they did in the "Red Alert" games) or went somewhere wild like Australia? How would that turn out do you think?

I'm just batting around wild ideas again, I've been playing too much of the aforementioned games I fear.
