Pripyat, the infamous city adjacent to the infamous Chernobyl nuclear power station that melted down into the world's worst nuclear power disaster in 1986 is now (following decades of cleanup) one of the most-photographed modern ruins. An entire well-funded "model" Soviet city abandoned overnight, and left untouched for decades within visual range of a terrifying demolished nuclear power plant- it's no wonder photographers of all stripes are drawn to it.

I have a battery of related photos to drop here, but I'll start with this one from THIS terrific Tumblr blog. If you have (or have run across) any photos of Pripyat or abandoned Chernobyl, feel free to drop them in here!

A creepy picture of a doll and gas masks from inside the hospital at Pripyat. Tumblr find, dated as 2011.

The famous DUGA radar installation, intended to warn the residents of Pripyat and the operators of Chernobyl in the event of an impending attack by the west. Soviet radar installations are typically larger than their American counterparts, with much of the radar equipment and fixtures exposed to the elements, making them look rather alien and out of place, especially once nature has started to reclaim them.

Just to give you an idea how absolutely huge this radar assembly is...

The whole installation was abandoned in 1989 following the disaster at Chernobyl. Another similar installation in Siberia operated up until about the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, but was abandoned sometime after that as well. In terms of raw power to operate, the DUGA radar system was one of the most powerful- gobbling up 10MW to operate. It's no wonder why it was built so close to a massive nuclear power station!

Though it predates the Chernobyl disaster, not far outside of Pripyat are a small collection of abandoned Soviet World War Two vehicles, including this ISU-152 assault gun.
