A battery of Shopko stores are closing, though the only one in Wisconsin is a former Pamida (rebranded as "Shopko Hometown" in 2011) that's getting the ax.

Shopko filed Chapter 11 yesterday, and the company has declared it will ax more stores, while shifting it's optical business into freestanding facilities outside of their traditional retail stores- a curious shift their CEO seems to think will save th company. Fingers crossed he's right, or Shopko may become the next casualty of the retail apocalypse...

In an odd twist, they are closing both stores in the Stevens Point/Plover area. The one on the North side of Stevens Point is the last standing retail element of the former CenterPoint mall complex. It'll be interesting to see what comes to that location, if the city doesn't bulldoze it for park land. As for the one in Plover, that's a big store space in a long row of empty big-box stores from the 90's. Good luck there.
Also, they're canning the big one in Menasha, right next to the Fox Valley Mall too. Crazy.

Well, Shopko has failed to find a buyer, which means they are going into full liquidation. The whole Shopko "empire" that has stood for the better part of a century vanishes.

There's a lot of factors at play when a big retailer goes under. Most point to intense pressure from online, and mismanagement. Shopko had plenty of both, set up to serve a higher end crowd while the quality of goods continued to dwindle. The mismanagement, in my opinion, stems from Jill Soltau, Shopko's President from 2013 until 2015, under which a huge number of unusual measures were taken to reduce costs, most critically the reduction of staff, staff incentives, and a the resulting blow to the Shopko Pharmacy business that ultimately drove it into insolvency. You can't charge more for lackluster goods and sub-par customer service. She would then go on to implement the same things at Joann Fabrics (where we didn't have a pharmacy business to knock over, so they focused on our janitorial and support infrastructure instead), and now she's moved on to run J.C. Penney. Good luck to em, with a track record like this, I wonder how long it'll be until all the rest of their stores go up in smoke too...

Well, some more Shopko news...
A developer from New York has bought out Shopko's Green Bay headquarters and several of it's stores. They are not going to operate Shopko, they just want the property. At least that's a few stores that will become something new in some capacity.
...and that's the end of the Shopko foundation. Pretty sad all around.
