In 1973, the United States launched Skylab. During launch, the Space Station suffered an accident that nearly destroyed the space station. Without a heat shield, the station would have been lost. NASA called on it's engineers, and Jack Kinsler had the answer in the form of an immense umbrella contraption. Check it out!
