A few tiny pieces of debris have washed ashore on the African coast, but the plane itself has never been located. It is believed that a member of the flight crew may have deliberately sent the plane off towards the empty Indian Ocean to it's doom, but this is all circumstantial evidence and without the plane (or some bigger pieces of it) we may never know what actually happened to the airliner, it's crew, or it's passengers.
The investigation leaders had this to say in closing: "It is almost inconceivable and certainly societally unacceptable in the modern aviation era with 10 million passengers boarding commercial aircraft every day, for a large commercial aircraft to be missing and for the world not to know with certainty what became of the aircraft and those on board. We share your profound and prolonged grief and deeply regret that we have not been able to locate the aircraft, nor those 239 souls on board that remain missing."
