Those in charge of the investigation searching for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 which vanished in 2014 are calling off the search, almost entirely empty handed.

A few tiny pieces of debris have washed ashore on the African coast, but the plane itself has never been located. It is believed that a member of the flight crew may have deliberately sent the plane off towards the empty Indian Ocean to it's doom, but this is all circumstantial evidence and without the plane (or some bigger pieces of it) we may never know what actually happened to the airliner, it's crew, or it's passengers.

The investigation leaders had this to say in closing: "It is almost inconceivable and certainly societally unacceptable in the modern aviation era with 10 million passengers boarding commercial aircraft every day, for a large commercial aircraft to be missing and for the world not to know with certainty what became of the aircraft and those on board. We share your profound and prolonged grief and deeply regret that we have not been able to locate the aircraft, nor those 239 souls on board that remain missing."

Or will it?

The Malaysian Government has struck a deal with Ocean Infinity, a US-based salvage company, to resume searches in areas Australian authorities predicted the plane may yet be based on the final results of the search they called off. Ocean Infinity, based on their history and what some of their people have said, seem to be the best chance to find the plane (or some significant piece of it) now that government funded search operations have concluded. Story is HERE.

Well, Ocean Infinity, the US-salvage operation that's been looking for the plane since the winter has come up empty handed, and is headed home. Despite scanning 112,000 square miles of the ocean floor in what is still considered the most likely places for the plane to have been, they've found nothing of interest.

Some now theorize that the plane may have been broken into very small pieces when it crashed, and therefore any remaining pieces will have been scattered by undersea currents or buried in mud, making any positive identification difficult, if not impossible.

The government of Malaysia is offering $70 million to the person or organization that can find the plane, but plans no further searches of it's own.
